Crooks Blog

January 6, 2007

ok so in this chapter John Steinback introduced the character Crooks. Crooks gets his name from having a crook in his back. He is also black so he has to stay away and out of the white ranch hands quaters. Thus he is forced to sleep out in the stables with the animals. I guess you could say that Crooks is one of the more complex characters in this book. For example, when Lennie comes in to talk with Crooks. First he critisizes Lennies plan for a farm. Then he tells Lennie that he wants in on the plan to. Then critisizes it again. I have realized in this chapter that the strong attack the weak and the weak attack the weaker. One quote that shows Crooks critisizem is “Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land.” from page 74. Two questions that i have are about Crooks. Why did he keep changing his mind about going in on Lennie’s plan? Why did he tell Lennie that George got hurt and was not going to come back?

My ending reaction

December 22, 2006

Wow, the ending of the book has a really twisted ending. I never saw it coming. I still do not understand why George would shoot Lennie. I know that Goerge was not very nice to Lennie but I can’t believe that George shot him. Lennie did not mean any harm on anyone. It’s not his fault that he was mentally slow. I guess George just never gave Lennie a fighting chace. Totally not fair if you ask me. This ending really bums me out. I always thought that Lennie was a pretty ok kind of guy. O well sad sad sad ending.

Mice and Man Number Three

December 22, 2006

As I read pages 37-65 in the Mice and Men book I discovered a lot. One passage that stood out to me was this. “If I tol’ him to walk over a cliff, over he’d go.” This was said by George to Slim on page 40. I think this one stood out because it really shows how dumb Lennie is. If someone told me to walk over a cliff there is no way that I would actually do it. Lennie would do it because he looks up to George for everthing. Also because he does not no any better. I wonder what made Lennie the way he is? Why is George so mean to Lennie? How can he not have even the littlest amount of sympathy for Lennie?

Mice and Men Again

December 6, 2006

Ok so now that I have read pages 17-37 this is what I have got. George and Lennie finally made it to the ranch where they are to work. Lennie freaked out about his bed because there was lice powder next to it and he thought there was lice in his bed. Then the boss came in and lectured them about being late to the ranch. After talking to them he realized that Lennie does not talk much at all. The boss almost figured out their secret. Now that George and Lennie met the boss they thought they were safe. Next Curley, the boss’s son came in and began to harrass Lennie about how big he was and how Curley hated big people. George has come to the conclusion that he does not like Curley at all. The last person the they met was Curley’s wife. George makes comments about how she looks like a hooker and so on. But Lennie thinks that she is very beautiful and he cannot keep his eyes off of her. That is where Chapter Two ended.

Important Passages

November 20, 2006

“Well, look. Lennie – if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush” (15). I think that this line is important because it might hint to something that is going to happen in the future. In my mind I am thinking that something is going to go wrong. Lennie might get into trouble since that is what he is famous for. But no matter what George will take care of him. I loved the fact that they look out for each other.  It is like they are brothers.

Comparing John Steinbeck

November 20, 2006

So after watching this movie I have come to some conclusions. So far I have noticed that John likes to focus in on a few main characters instead of having a whole group of characters to keep track of. This also helps the readers to understand what is going on in  the text. Some traits of the characters are that they are very hard working people, going through many hard times. Also the characters to me seem to be determined to make it through no matter what comes along the way. So far Steinbeck has kept a lot of the traits of the characters the same from The Grapes of Wrath to Of Mice and Men. The settings between the two are very similair as well. They seem to be on the prarie where it is hot and dry. Lots of dust and the season seems to be summer.
