essays

January 29, 2007

Wow what a topic. Yes I have written essays before. I have had a great deal of experience with them. They are kind of a pain though. Sometimes I will be in the middle of one and completely lose track of what I was writting about. They are usually worth a lot of points which is a real bummer. If you are givin a good topic then ususally you can write a lot more with out any trouble. I guess that it would be fair to say that essays are both good and bad. It is good to get writting practice. I am not fond of writting essays though.

My Blog on Whatever I Want

January 24, 2007

This book was a great book for me. Usually I hate reading, but this book really reached out and grabbed me in a way. I guess that I could relate to what the character Katie was going through. The way she explained that girls at school where always looked at as sex symbols. The way that there was constant peer pressure to advance sexually. This is the same is middle school and high school even now. Parents and teachers may not see it but believe me it is there. It’s really pretty sad that middle school students now have that kind of pressure but I do not think that there is anything that anyone can do to change it. I even notice how girls are starting to lose respect for them selves even! I love the way that Katie tells the story strait from her heart she does not hold anything back. I think that the book would be harder to understand or relate to if it were told as a third person or something like that. It really surprised me how Katie reacted when her internet friend started to bring up sexual subjects. She was excellent at changing the topic right away. This book did sometimes get very frustrating. This was because Katie would give out information that I know she shouldn’t and I just wanted to stop her but I could not. This book, to me is a great example as to why we as young adults need to be extremely careful about what we do in chat rooms and on the internet all together. Bad things really do happen to innocent people. Just when you tell yourself that it would or will never happen to you it does. That’s why I think young adults, like myself need to take books like this into consideration when it comes to our daily lives. This is just my personal opinion though.

My Blog on the Setting of Katie.com

January 24, 2007

So basically the setting has involved a couple of places. First off Katie was in middle school. She tells stories of everyday life at school. Next it is the summer and Katie pretty much just stayed home. She had discovered the world of internet chat rooms. It was not long before she became obsessed. The computer became her life for a while. The next stage of the setting was her freshman year of high school. Here she also describes the everyday setting of her classrooms and things. In my opinion the author chose the middle school and high school settings because that is what most chat rooms contain, is teens. To me this is where young adults go because you can be who ever you want to be on the internet. So if you’re not perfect or something like that you can portray your self that way on the chat rooms. If the author had the setting somewhere like an adult work place you would assume that Katie would have a better understanding of the dangers of chat rooms. The only other ways that the setting changes are that Katie and her family travel to certain places. This is because of Katie’s swim team, which she has been on for so long. I think the setting changes to make things more interesting when her chat room friend tries to meet her in person. I really liked reading this book because overall it was not confusing. The setting did change, but not drastically. The characters did not change much either. The moral of the story never changed. I also love the fact that this book is a true story it makes it easier for me to be understanding about the subject of child sexual abuse. So that is my blog about the setting of this book.

my blog on characters of Katie.com

January 11, 2007

This is my view so far of each character from the book Katie.com. First is Katie, she is a typical 13 year old girl. She is self-consciences about her body. For example she avoids mirrors at all costs. She has an older sister named Abby. She is four years older than Katie and is in college. Katie also has a little sister named Carrie. She is four years younger than Katie. They argue and fight a lot. Katie has a step father named David. Katie and her step father do not get along very well. Katie’s mother is her hero. She works all the time but that’s just what she has always done. Next would be Katie’s best friend whose name is Karen. They do pretty much everything together. Their favorite hobby is reading gossip articles from popular teen magazines. When Katie goes to school most of the rumors that are going around are about sexual things. This just blows my mind because she is not in high school yet. People are constantly pressuring Katie to get a boyfriend but at first she is hesitant, that is only until she stumbles upon the chat room world. Finally, come the characters that Katie begins to meet on the internet. She ends up opening doors to a world of chat room danger. She is very open in her chats with people. She tells them her name, age, sex, and address right away. This is not safe at all but her parents are the technology challenged. They are both new to the whole computer thing and don’t really have that much interest in it any way. This is sad to see because Katie is putting herself in great danger and her parents are totally unaware of it. Katie thinks that chat rooms are safe because she stays in teen chat rooms. However she does not realize that people lie about anything and everything on the internet, including their age.

my blog on the plot of Katie.com

January 11, 2007

This is my plot entry of Katie.com. Ok so this book seems to be pretty basic. The main character name is Katie. The setting seems to be a rich neighborhood in
Connecticut. She goes to school just like a normal teen. Soon she discovers internet chat rooms. Her parents always gave her warnings but she never listened. Not long after discovering these chat rooms Katie becomes addicted. She would be on first thing in the morning and right before bed at night. So far the way the story is going it’s interesting. Probably because it is just like modern times, where almost everyone is on some kind of instant messenger. I do highly suspect that Katie will soon end up in a world of trouble by meeting someone that is not who they say they are.  This is just my personal thoughts but I will have to keep reading to find out. Overall most of the events in the book have to deal with Katie and the computer. Thus the reason the book is called katie.com. Also the events have really happened because this book is based on a true story. Katie does speak about how she some days likes being in a rich neighborhood but other times she feels like she is living in a superficial world. To me the place where she lives seems like
Hollywood with all the extremely rich people and their plastic surgery’s. People in Katie’s neighborhood do not have to try to look perfect, as she describes them they all ready are. I could not imagine living somewhere like that. It would drive me crazy to live in a world of Barbie and ken dolls. The way the Katie tolerates all this is amazing to me. Katie is all ready a self-conscience teen let alone having all these perfect people around you all the time.

Crooks Blog

January 6, 2007

ok so in this chapter John Steinback introduced the character Crooks. Crooks gets his name from having a crook in his back. He is also black so he has to stay away and out of the white ranch hands quaters. Thus he is forced to sleep out in the stables with the animals. I guess you could say that Crooks is one of the more complex characters in this book. For example, when Lennie comes in to talk with Crooks. First he critisizes Lennies plan for a farm. Then he tells Lennie that he wants in on the plan to. Then critisizes it again. I have realized in this chapter that the strong attack the weak and the weak attack the weaker. One quote that shows Crooks critisizem is “Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land.” from page 74. Two questions that i have are about Crooks. Why did he keep changing his mind about going in on Lennie’s plan? Why did he tell Lennie that George got hurt and was not going to come back?

my christmas story

January 3, 2007

Ok so my story. This happened to me on new years eve. I went to the Central dance. It was really boring so my little sister and I left. We went to my friend Jermry’s house for a party. There was a lot of people there that I did not know but it was fun. I got to watch a drunk girl fall down the stairs. Then go up them again to refill the drink that she spilled. I never got pulled over by a cop. I did not get grounded either so I had a good break.
